Everton could announce Asmir Begovic transfer on Saturday night

Everton could announce the signing of Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as early as Saturday night, according to Alex Crook.

The talkSPORT journalist, writing on his personal Twitter profile, made the claim on Saturday afternoon [17/07/21], the day that various news outlets and reporters have detailed the 34-year-old’s medical with the Blues.

Crook wrote: “Not anticipating any hitches with the Begovic to Everton deal after medical today. Could be formally announced as early as tonight.”

Swift signing

This is a transfer that has moved at a rapid rate.

Only yesterday [Friday] did initial, substantiated reports start to emerge that Everton were keen on recruiting the Bosnian shot-stopper who starred for the Cherries in the Championship last season.

Now, it looks like a deal could be announced less than 48 hours later.

It’s a signing that needed to be made – Robin Olsen departed the club earlier this summer after his loan deal from Roma expired – and the search has been on to fill the void ever since.

21-year-old Joao Virginia is still on the books, but with little senior experience it always appeared unlikely that he would be handed the role of Jordan Pickford understudy.

It remains to be seen whether he is now handed a loan move in order to increase his first-team experience, or whether Rafa Benitez will keep him on as third-choice goalkeeper.

But one thing looks to be certain – Begovic is joining Everton, barring any unforeseen, last-minute complications.

That will solve one dilemma, and Benitez will be keen to address other issues in the squad and build on his first signing as Blues boss.

A right-back and forward are surely next on the agenda.
