Fabrizio Romano: Everton agree terms with Asmir Begovic, contract to be signed on Saturday

Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will sign a contract on Saturday as he closes in on a move to Everton, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer guru made the claim on Saturday morning [17/07/21], via his personal Twitter profile.

He wrote: “Asmir Begovic from Bournemouth to Everton, done deal and here-we-go confirmed. Medicals completed today and contract set to be signed in the next hours.

“Begovic will join Everton on a free transfer and personal terms are agreed until June 2023.

The 34-year-old’s current contract with the Cherries doesn’t expire until June 2022, but it looks like the Championship outfit will allow the Bosnian to leave for nothing.

Everton

Bargain

This seems like a no-brainer, all things told.

Not only do Everton get a reliable back-up goalkeeper, one rated as the best in the EFL Championship last season, but he will sign on a free transfer, meaning the Blues will not have to shell out a transfer fee.

That saves valuable funds that can be used in more pressing areas elsewhere on the pitch, such as at right-back and along the forward line.

Furthermore, Begovic classifies as a homegrown player due to his emergence on the scene at Portsmouth.

A two-year deal means the club will not be tied to a long-term deal, and can either identify his replacement within those two years or allow Joao Virginia to become Jordan Pickford’s understudy by 2023.

It may not be the blockbuster start to the Rafa Benitez reign that people might have expected, but it’s one less headache to have to worry about after Robin Olsen’s loan spell ended in May and he returned to his parent club Roma.
