Kevin Campbell: Kalidou Koulibaly would be perfect for Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has backed Everton’s proposed move for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

According to 90min, Toffees new manager Rafa Benitez wants to reunite with the Senegalese powerhouse and is keen to move Yerry Mina on.

Napoli are said to be ready to listen to offers of around £35million for his signature.

Campbell believes the 30-year-old has what it takes to succeed at Goodison Park, insisting he could be willing to leave Naples having spent seven seasons at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said: “He’s worked with him that’s for sure.

“Why not? It’s about time he left Napoli now. He’s been there a long time. Quick, imposing and a good footballer.”

Massive player

First things first, Everton really need a strong defence given Benitez’s style of play, and we do not have the centre-backs that are up to the required standard.

Mina, Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey all have different shortcomings, with inexperience an issue for the two youngsters.

Landing someone like Koulibaly would make both of them improve and learn from one of the best centre-backs in the business.

A pairing of Keane and Koulibaly will definitely make us hard to beat, and it is understandable that Benitez would love such a player working for him at Everton.

He brought the veteran defender to the club during his spell in their dugout, and a reunion could be on the cards.

The Spaniard does not joke with his defence, and we reckon owner Farhad Moshiri will be willing to sign the Senegalese for him.

While recruiting old players is against our transfer principles under director of football Marcel Brands, a few exceptions have been made.

A strong backline would help boost our top-six chances, and Everton should be pulling out all the stops in getting this deal done.
