Express journalist: Asmir Begovic likely to take big wage cut to join Everton
Express journalist Ryan Taylor has suggested that Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will be taking a big wage cut as he closes in on a move to Everton.
Begovic, 34, is on the verge of a move to Merseyside, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claimed on Saturday afternoon [17/07/21] that the Bosnian is set to join on a free transfer until 2023.
After a concerned Blues fan asked Taylor how much Begovic was on at Bournemouth, the Express Sport journalist responded via personal Twitter profile: “He was on a Premier League wage at Bournemouth. He was their top earner by a considerable distance (£73,000-a-week) so getting him off the bill is huge for them, particularly in Championship.
“Suspect he’ll have taken a cut to join Everton but he gets two years, only had one left at Bournemouth.
Taylor elaborated in a further reply on his Twitter profile, writing: “Highly doubt Everton matched his wage. If they did, it’s probably over two seasons.”
Saving the pennies
As suggested by Taylor, it’s highly unlikely Everton would be paying over the odds for a number two goalkeeper.
Begovic will have signed that lucrative Bournemouth contract when he was younger and in his prime, and he will know that the money cannot keep on rising.
Signing with Everton, though, he will get the added security of a two-year contract while still earning a considerable sum, and his profile will be further enhanced back in the Premier League.
For the Blues, they’re getting a reliable shot-stopper as an understudy to Jordan Pickford, someone who can push the England number one onto even greater heights, and it will come at a modest cost.
The club will pay no transfer fee for Begovic, and his wages are not astronomical, or even excessive by Taylor’s suggestions, so it appears to be a no-brainer to sign him.
