Tony Cascarino: Asmir Begovic is a good signing for Everton

Tony Cascarino believes Asmir Begovic was a tad unprofessional at Bournemouth but will be a good signing for Everton.

The goalkeeper passed his medical at Everton on Saturday [talkSPORT] and is on the cusp of joining the Toffees on a free transfer.

With Robin Olsen not joining permanently, the club were looking for a backup to Jordan Pickford, and the former Bournemouth keeper has been chosen as the ideal man to move to Goodison Park this summer.

Discussing the transfer live on talkSPORT, Cascarino said, “I hope Asmir Begovic has changed his attitude since that second leg of that play-off at Brentford.

“Where he was a little unprofessional at times, one might say.”

“£70k-a-week at Bournemouth. But that’s still a hell of a deal.”

Let’s wait and watch

The Argentine has prior experience of playing in World Cup and domestic cup finals and would’ve arguably been a better option than Begovic.

Why we did not pursue that transfer like we did Begovic’s is anybody’s guess.

However, now that the Bosnian is the man walking through the door at Goodison Park, we have to deal with the fact that he’s going to be our second choice.

He comes with previous experience of being a Premier League number one, so we’re expecting him to be unfazed whenever he’s called upon in Pickford’s stead.

At 34, he won’t be as agile as he was in his heyday, but goalkeepers’ careers tend to have higher longevity and we’re hoping that he puts in good performances for us as long as he’s at the club.

His ball-playing abilities need some polishing and our goalkeeping unit will have to work doubly as hard with him to get him more confident on the ball.

This pre-season will be a good indicator as to how good a player he can be for us.
