Demarai Gray completes Everton medical, deal all but done
Everton have all but completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen winger Demarai Gray, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning, the Sky Sports Italy journalist reported that Gray, 25, has completed his medical and is set to sign three-year deal with the Toffees.
It is understood that there will be an option for that contract to be extended by an extra year.
Good business – but not mind-blowing
Evertonians need to be relaxed about these new signings.
Yes, a lot of people were concerned about Rafa Benitez being the new manager due to his previous links to Liverpool and yes, his first few signings have been underwhelming.
However, we really don’t see Asmir Begovic, Andros Townsend and Gray as being regular starters for us next season in the Premier League.
We had a lot of injury issues last season and we lack strength in depth.
Begovic replaces Robin Olsen and Townsend and Gray offer us extra options in an area where Benitez needs to.
And he’s managed to do that by spending around £1.5million on Gray and nothing on Begovic and Townsend in terms of transfer fees.
It’s not mind-blowing business, no. But it is clever business and we feel as though it’s putting the building blocks in place for a spate of new good signings that should come in the coming weeks.
Begovic, Townsend and Gray will no doubt try their best for us and will hopefully contribute to a successful debut season for Benitez at Goodison Park.
