Tim Cahill reacts as Everton ace Richarlison wins Olympic gold

Everton forward Richarlison has an Olympic gold medal to his name after Brazil secured a 2-1 win over Spain in the final of the tournament on Saturday.

The Toffees star insisted he wanted to play for his country at the competition in Japan despite already playing in the Copa America some weeks ago.

Everton eventually approved the request of the 24-year-old and he led Brazil to victory, taking to his personal Instagram account to bask in the glory and praise his teammates, saying: “Proud of this group.”

Toffees legend Tim Cahill was delighted for Richarlison, reacting on his post thus.

Huge achievement

The Brazil international emerged as the highest goalscorer at the tournament, bagging five goals, including a hat-trick against Germany that put him in the history books as the first Premier League player to do at the Olympic games.

He justified his insistence to play at the competition, and Everton manager Rafa Benitez will now hope he can bring that form to Goodison Park when he joins his teammates.

We were on the receiving end of a 4-0 shellacking from Manchester United at Old Trafford some hours after Richarlison secured his gold medal, and it was one of the worst performances we have ever seen from Everton in a while.

It was only a friendly, but it did not do our confidence any good ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener against Southampton.

As it stands, Richarlison is set to miss that game as he is likely to be handed almost three weeks of rest after the busy summer he has had playing at two international competitions.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the friendly through a knock, and Benitez could have a couple of his biggest attacking players unavailable for a while.

We definitely need everyone back as soon as possible as we cannot afford to start 2021-22 playing like we did against the Red Devils.

Having a fit and refreshed Richarlison available sooner rather than later would be huge, and we cannot wait to see the Olympian back in Everton colours.
