Atalanta make Everton enquiry over Alex Iwobi

Atalanta are on the hunt for Premier League attackers and have made an enquiry over Everton winger Alex Iwobi, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Italian news outlet claims the Serie A side have “asked for information” about the 25-year-old Nigeria international, with Daniel James [Manchester United], Takumi Minamino [Liverpool] and Bertrand Traore [Aston Villa} also on their radar.

However, the report suggests that the Champions League club are prioritising a deal for Iwobi over the aforementioned trio, though the ex-Arsenal forward would need to lower his current £2.5million salary.

Time up?

Iwobi has had a couple of seasons to impress at Everton since moving from north London in a big-money move in 2019, but he has failed to show any sort of consistency and has drawn the ire from fans on many occasions with some lacklustre performances.

He was even forced into some unfamiliar positions last season with Carlo Ancelotti deploying him as a wing-back to solve an injury crisis, while the signing of Colombian superstar James Rodriguez also afforded him fewer opportunities on the right-wing.

New Blues boss Rafa Benitez has already signed a couple of new wingers this summer in the form of Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, with Burnley’s Dwight McNeil next on the agenda.

Even if McNeil does not sign this summer, Benitez will still have Townsend, Gray, Rodriguez and Richarlison as options to play on the wing, so Iwobi’s chances of playing any sort of regular football appear minimal.

A move elsewhere would be in his and the club’s best interests, but whether a move abroad and reduction in wages appeals to him remains to be seen, while Atalanta would still have to stump up a suitable offer to Everton.

In other Everton news, the Blues want to sign this 2020/21 European title winner who was at Real Madrid under Rafa Benitez.
