TalkSPORT host baffled by Everton fan claim about Calvert-Lewin

Perry Groves was left baffled on talkSPORT when an Everton fan called in to bemoan striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin, 24, scored 16 goals in 33 Premier League appearances last season but in his final 13 outings of the campaign, he netted just three times.

Everton fan Alex admits he has doubts about the England striker going into the new season but former Arsenal star Groves found that difficult to agree with.

“I’m not convinced by Calvert-Lewin, if I’m being honest,” said the caller on talkSPORT, as shown in a clip on YouTube.

Groves was visibly perplexed and asked: “Really?”

The Everton fan continued by saying: “I don’t think he’s scored many goals outside the six-yard box and for me, that’s a big problem for a striker.”

Groves then said: “No, that’s the other way around. You want to be scoring the majority of your goals in the six-yard box, that’s where his game’s improved without a shadow of a doubt.”

Alex continued to back up his claim. “Towards the back end of last season, I don’t think he scored many goals at all, if not any,” he said.

“I think a lot of his goals came from the first half and that’s a problem if they have another dry spell off him again. We’ve got no one to come in off the bench to take his place to start scoring goals.”

Legitimate concerns?

Calvert-Lewin started last season brilliantly with seven goals in his first five Premier League appearances.

While he did struggle in the second half of the season, wasn’t that true of every Everton player?

If Carlo Ancelotti had his head in the game and wasn’t in his final few months at Goodison, would DCL have scored more goals?

If James Rodriguez cared about the Blues, would he have created more chances for Calvert-Lewin to finish?

Lucas Digne was constantly assisting goals for the striker before his injury but after his spell on the sidelines, his form dipped and, as such, Calvert-Lewin stopped scoring as many goals.

We have plenty of concerns about this Everton squad but concerns about Calvert-Lewin pale in comparison to the rest.

If a team is playing well, the strikers score more goals unless they’re squandering massive chances and Calvert-Lewin didn’t really do that either.
