Paul Merson has been unimpressed by the players Everton have signed this summer under Rafa Benitez.
The Toffees brought in Asmir Begovic, Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend this summer, but Merson believes that it’s not the calibre of player that the club should be targeting.
Discussing this on Sky Sports, he said, as relayed by Football Daily, “He signs Townsend, he signs Gray, and you’re like, woah, woah, that’s no disrespect, I’m not being horrible, but I honestly thought they were going to go sign world-class players.
“He’s not going to take Everton to the next step, and that’s not his fault, but if I’m Everton I’m majorly disappointed in the signings so far.”
Merson, who’s already a polarising figure, wasn’t appreciated by most Toffees fans on our Facebook page.
Here’s what they said:

Should we be happy?
Our summer has been anything but wonderful, so in a way, Merson does make some sense as these are not signings that will take us to the next level.
We don’t really know whom to be pointing fingers at for this kind of shambles, but things have to change soon or we could risk finishing outside the top half.
Our performance against Southampton was good, but we’ve still got a long way to go and our current crop of players can only take us so far.
Having a manager like Rafa Benitez at the helm, one expects better players coming through the door and so far, the Spaniard has failed to attract quality names at Goodison Park.
