Kevin Campbell praises Rafa Benitez’ tactics at Everton

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has hailed Rafa Benitez for his tactics after Everton picked up three points in their Premier League opener against Southampton.

The Spaniard played a flat 4-4-2, and pushed his wingers forward to deliver crosses into the box at every opportunity.

Two goals came from that, and Campbell believes it will be “key” to continue feeding the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “Just like anything, you look at what you’ve got, and you’ve got the try and get the best out of it.

“Calvert-Lewin is probably one of the best in the Premier League for attacking the ball in the box, you’ve got to feed him.

“You’ve got to deliver the early ball, that’s the key. That is what they’ve done and it’s been absolutely fantastic.”

Perfect.

Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have already proven themselves to be great additions on the cheap this summer.

At every opportunity they were given, they launched a ball into the box and it caused constant problems for the Southampton defence.

With Leeds up next, this could be critical.

The Whites had their struggles with balls into the box heavily criticised last season, and Calvert-Lewin took advantage of that at Elland Road in that fixture.

He will be hoping for more of the same, except this time there will be even more service available to him in West Yorkshire.

Expect a goal or two this weekend, Dom.
