Everton sign ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan
Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Everton have signed ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan after an injury to Harry Tyrer.
Speaking during his pre-Leeds press conference streamed on the Everton YouTube channel, Benitez announced the surprise news on Friday morning.
He said: “We have an injury to Tyrer, the young goalkeeper, so we have signed Andy Lonergan as a backup.

“He is a player that can give us some experience because we needed to sort this problem out in case [of an issue].
“So, we have a new signing but it’s a player that maybe no one was expecting.”

Out of nowhere
Well, it’s certainly not a signing we were expecting, but an injury to 19-year-old Tyrer has forced the Spaniard’s hand.
37-year-old Lonergan now comes to take his place as third-choice goalkeeper.
That seems pretty unremarkable news, but it’s his recent association to our Merseyside rivals that will raise eyebrows.
Although he never played for the Liverpool first team, Lonergan can still count the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup among the honours he collected while on the books of the Reds during a year-long spell that ended last year.
His only outing in the last two seasons was an EFL Cup game for Stoke City against Tottenham Hotspur last year.
But now he walks the rare path of being an Everton and Liverpool player in his career.
It now means half of the four players we have signed this summer are goalkeepers.
In other Everton news, the Blues are in talks to sign this title-winning forward, bid lined up for Anfield equaliser hero.
