Everton tried to hijack Atletico Madrid’s move for Matheus Cunha

Everton have made an attempt to hijack Atletico Madrid’s move for Hertha BSC striker Matheus Cunha, according to Sky Sport journalist Max Bielefeld.

The La Liga giants have reached an agreement in principle to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian, and he prefers to move to Spain.

The Toffees’ last-ditch was not successful, but a deal is yet to be signed between Cunha and Atletico.

Bielefeld posted on his personal Twitter account this morning: “Agreement in principle between Hertha BSC and Atlético Madrid for a transfer of Matheus Cunha!

“Hertha accepted €30m [£25.7million] plus bonuses – nothing is signed though.

“Everton tried to hijack the deal in the last hours, but the player prefers a move to Spain!”

Too late

Everton really could do with a versatile forward like Cunha, but it appears we have moved too little, too late.

The youngster and Richarlison led the line for their country at the Olympics in Japan, combining to win gold, and having both of them at Goodison Park would have been massive.

While the Toffees may have been able to match the wages the La Liga champions are offering the Bundesliga sensation, we sadly are not able to match their ambitions and recent successes.

Diego Simeone’s side have a league title to defend and Champions League football to play this season, and those are definitely more attractive.

Everton

Everton failed to qualify for European football last term, and that has not given us any chance in the race for such a brilliant forward.

It appears Rafa Benitez is keen on landing a frontman before the summer transfer window shuts in nine days time, and we can expect a player to get signed in that position in the coming days after missing out on Cunha.
