Rafa Benitez must axe Michael Keane after woeful start to season

Everton must axe Michael Keane from the starting eleven as he has already started to cost his team points only two games into the new season.

The English defender was at fault for Adam Armstrong’s goal against the Toffees and even against Leeds United on Saturday, played a major role in letting Mateusz Klich get his team back in the contest.

There have been calls to drop Yerry Mina, but the Colombian hasn’t made mistakes at this rate as the former Manchester United defender.

Breaking The Lines journalist and co-creator Zach Lowry did not mince his words in his assessment of the 28-year-old.

Via his personal Twitter account, he wrote, “Everton gave Michael Keane a five-year contract less than a year ago.

“Not every club runs itself into the ground with horrible, big-money transfers, sometimes with brainless contract extensions. In Everton’s case, it’s probably both.”

While we know that Rafa Benitez did not have too many options with Ben Godfrey missing, but once he’s back it should be an obvious decision for the Spaniard.

Keane has never looked assured in defence for us in the past six months and we would find it hard to pinpoint a particular game where he’s been our standout performer.

Often, the team has to carry him and this cannot happen if we are looking to better on last season’s performances.

Godfrey is a better passer, better in the air and has a good tackle on him and most importantly his positional awareness is much better than Keane’s.

We’re unlikely to sign another centre-back this summer and Benitez seems content to play a back four so Keane has to be the one making way for Godfrey as he would be the perfect man to supplement Mina in defence.
