Matheus Cunha scheduled for medical at Atletico Madrid despite Everton interest

Everton have missed out on signing Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Hertha Berlin, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning, the Sky Sports Italy journalist reported that Cunha, 22, is closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid and is due to undergo a medical with the La Liga champions.

It is understood that despite Everton’s interest, paperwork was completed on Monday night for Cunha to swap Berlin for Madrid in a deal worth around £25.6million.

That’s a shame

Rafa Benitez has found it tough to bring new players to Goodison Park this summer due to financial restraints.

It’s likely that the Financial Fair Play rules stopped the Blues making a concrete move for Cunha because we hadn’t heard much about the Brazilian ace prior to this update from transfer guru Romano.

However, it is a massive shame that we haven’t been able to land the Olympic champion.

Cunha is a deep-lying forward who can play up front or as a No 10.

With James Rodriguez and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s futures at Goodison seemingly in doubt, Cunha would have definitely been a solid replacement for them.

He could have also been a great back-up option for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the centre-forward area.

Last season, Cunha scored eight goals and supplied seven assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

He’s been compared to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino on the Bundesliga website for his style of forward play as he likes to connect with fellow attackers and bamboozle defenders with his skill and pace.

It’s been a slow and frustrating summer and there’s only a week left until the transfer window slams shut.

Let’s hope Benitez and Marcel Brands can whip up some excitement in the becoming days.

In other Everton news, the Blues have granted this senior player permission to speak to other clubs.
