Leon Osman: Demarai Gray proving to be a real gem of a signing for Everton

Everton secured their second Premier League victory of the new season with an empathic 2-0 win over Brighton away from home.

Demarai Gray grabbed the opener before Dominic Calvert-Lewin doubled the visitors’ lead from the spot in the second half.

Gray opened his Toffees account last weekend at Leeds United and the impressive form of the 25-year-old attacker continued against the Seagulls.

The Brighton defence found it difficult to deal with the former Leicester City star, and Everton hero Leon Osman is impressed with the impact he has made since arriving at Goodison Park in the summer.

The pundit said after Gray’s goal (as shared on BBC Match of the Day official Twitter account): “Probably not quite as wide, but he was travelling with the ball, and it’s such a difficult skill to travel at the pace he does with the ball and then still have that composure to hit a good hard low shot like he did.

“Everton have looked good on the counterattack. They have soaked Brighton in, not allow them play passes and looked the real threat, growing into the game and that’s been coming.

“Demarai Gray has got real pace, real threat and most of the defenders are backing away like he’s really a trouble.”

Bargain

Gray cost Everton less than £2million following his move from Bayer Leverkusen, and with two goals already to his name in three Premier League games, it is safe to say he is turning out very good so far.

Should he keep up at this rate, the former England youth international ace could end up with at least 10 league goals at the end of the season.

Gray has not said it, but he definitely dreams of playing for the Three Lions at the World Cup this summer, and he could soon start attracting the attention of national team boss Gareth Southgate if keeps producing the goods constantly.

Rafa Benitez took a punt by signing the Premier League winner, and he is doing incredibly well in the Toffees shirt so far.

Right now, Gray is proving to be the bargain of the summer, and Everton fans will be hoping he can keep improving at this rate for the rest of the campaign.
