Andy Goldstein poses Rafa Benitez-Everton sack question on talkSPORT

Andy Goldstein has questioned how many games it will take for Everton to sack Rafa Benitez, despite the Spaniard’s superb start to his reign.

The arrival of Benitez was greeted with an air of derision earlier this summer, mainly due to his past Liverpool connections, but he looks to have won the majority around so far with three wins and a draw from his opening four fixtures.

However, that hasn’t stopped Goldstein from posing the big question via talkSPORT [03/09/21] on Friday night.

“Let me ask you this, it’s a horrible question to ask,” Goldstein said to an Everton fan live on-air.

“Because it’s Rafa Benitez, with his history and the pressure he is under, in your opinion Liam, how many games away, how many defeats is he from the sack, at all times?”

He added: “With defeat mounts pressure, he starts on minus number if you like with regards to trying to win the fans over, so if he went on a run where Everton lost maybe four games, do you think that’s enough?

Liam replied: “It depends who the games are against.

“I’d say it’s about 80-20 majority are that behind him now.”

Goldstein: “80% of Everton fans are happy with Benitez? I’m surprised.”

Incessant

These were questions that were being discussed heavily during the summer, before Benitez had even been given a chance to take charge of a game for Everton.

It’s fair to say there was not groundswell support for the appointment of Benitez among the Goodison faithful.

But the early weeks of his reign appear to have won some doubters around with the Blues playing some impressive, attacking football at times.

That’s despite a limited transfer budget this summer, with Benitez spending just £1.7million on Demarai Gray.

That’s why it seems harsh to even countenance asking how many games it would take to sack Benitez.

Yes, there may come a time when events change and fan opinion shifts.

But, for now, Benitez doesn’t deserve any more conjecture over his future.
