Newcastle to open new contract talks with Longstaff after Everton interest

Sean Longstaff could be up for grabs on a free transfer next year after Everton chased the Newcastle United midfielder in the summer, according to the Sunday People.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on September 5 [page 61] that Newcastle are set to open talks over a new contract with the 23-year-old, who’s set to exit St James’ Park next year as it stands.

It is understood that Rafa Benitez mulled over a swap deal for £10million-rated Longstaff in the summer with Tom Davies going the other way.

Renew interest next year?

Benitez hasn’t shied away from using some of his former players to pad out the squad at Goodison Park.

Andros Townsend and Salomon Rondon both played for the Spaniard during his spell at Newcastle and both joined the Blues in the summer on free transfers.

Could Longstaff become the third to join the Toffees after playing for Rafa in the North-East? It’s possible.

Longstaff, as it stands, will be available on a free transfer next summer and will be available on a pre-contract for non-English clubs in January.

Newcastle are bound to drop their £10million valuation of the central midfielder if they are worried about a foreign club making a move in January, offering him a deal and then losing him for free.

It puts us in a good position to make a move in the winter and that could be why Benitez held off on splashing the cash on Longstaff in the summer transfer window just gone.

Keep an eye on this one, Evertonians.

In other Everton news, Benitez and Marcel Brands were at odds over this player in the summer transfer window.
