Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri held talks over Everton signing Donny van de Beek
Farhad Moshiri and Marcel Brands held talks over Everton signing Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, according to Guido Albers.
The 24-year-old’s agent, speaking on Ziggo Sport Voetbal [05/09/21], claims the Everton power-brokers staged discussions to bring the 19-cap Netherlands international to Goodison Park.
This was the latest post-deadline day interview by Albers regarding his client after he spoke to talkSPORT’s Jim White last week.
The European Lad, followed by the likes of Express journalist Ryan Taylor on their Twitter account, relayed some quotes from Albers’ interview on Sunday.
“We had conversations with [Ole Gunnar] Solksjaer and the board,” Albers said. “We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.
“Donny talked with his father and his father in law. They agreed to take a step down in his career while knowing he could play every week. They don’t have a ’10’ over there with both James [Rodriguez] & [Gylfi] Sigurdsson having problems. The package was complete and everything was looking good.
“Then on Monday night we received a call from Solskjaer and the club who told us that a transfer was out of question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning.”
Reactive
It looks like the Blues board were prepared to act on an opportunity that presented itself late into the summer transfer window.
Midfield wasn’t Everton’s most important area to address in the market, with more focus on a right-back and attackers, but it appears they were willing to strengthen their options with the signing of van de Beek.
As a goalscoring midfielder, the Dutchman would have offered Rafa Benitez something different to go alongside the likes of Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Given his travails in Manchester, one would assume van de Beek would be allowed to leave the Red Devils in the summer.
With Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho further strengthening their forward line, and Jesse Lingard returning from his loan spell at West Ham, van de Beek is set to slide even further down the pecking order.
But he’s set to stay at Old Trafford until January at the earliest.
