Cenk Tosun and Ellis Simms back in Everton training
Everton forwards Cenk Tosun and Ellis Simms are both back in training this week, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Friday afternoon, Boyland shared an update on the duo who have been absent for the start of the 2021/22 campaign.
“Cenk Tosun and Ellis Simms back training with Everton this week,” he wrote.
Everton’s options in attack are fairly limited, so the duo’s return is likely to be welcomed by Rafa Benitez.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the 3-1 win over Burnley on Monday and Benitez has confirmed that he is likely to be sidelined for weeks.
Salomon Rondon was signed on August deadline-day and he made his Blues bow against the Clarets this week, but he is the only fit centre-forward option, and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to play full games in the near future.
Richarlison has been tasked with covering for Calvert-Lewin in the meantime, and while he hustled and harried against Burnley, he was outshined by wingers Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray. both of whom got on the scoresheet.
Turkish international Tosun is the forgotten man at Goodison Park after he was sent on loan to Besiktas earlier this year, only to quickly sustain a long-term injury.
He’s unlikely to feature much until January, where Everton may look to offload him before his contract expires in the summer.
It may be that Simms, 20, is actually ahead of the big-money Blues purchase.
Simms enjoyed a terrific half-season spell at Blackpool earlier this year, scoring 10 goals in 24 appearances as the Tangerines gained promotion to the Championship.
He may be loaned out to the second-tier in January, but his recent return to fitness will allow Benitez to get a good look at the Blues starlet who has made waves in the youth sides.
Simms and Tosun are unlikely to be involved on Saturday against Aston Villa, however, as they look to build up fitness after long lay-offs.
