Anthony Gordon may play out of position if Lucas Digne is injured

Everton left-back Lucas Digne sustained an injury in the 80th minute in the Carabao Cup clash against QPR on Tuesday night.

After the game, Rafa Benitez was quizzed about the availability of the Frenchman for the weekend fixture against Norwich.

He responded, via The Liverpool Echo, “It does not look very serious. But we will check tomorrow.”

In case Digne is not a hundred percent for the game, the Toffees will be in a fix as they do not have a recognised left-back in their side.

Ben Godfrey had to play out of position there in the dying stages of last night’s game, but that cannot be the long-term choice should Digne be ruled out for longer.

This could see Benitez hand 20-year-old Anthony Gordon a start at left wing-back against Norwich.

He played a back three comprising of Godfrey, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina against Burnley and could go for a similar system this weekend.

Gordon, who is a left winger by trade, is capable enough of playing as a left wing-back as he’s quality off the ball and pretty solid defensively.

He’s also a tireless runner and hugs the touchline so can provide Everton with much-needed depth and help stretch the opposition.

With there being no credible links to any left-back, this could be Benitez’s plan for the rest of the season.

At 20, Gordon will be happier to get a spot in the starting eleven so is unlikely to mind if the Spaniard plays him out of position.
