Lucas Digne suffers ankle injury in League Cup defeat to QPR
Everton are out of the Carabao Cup after losing 8-7 on penalties to Championship side Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday night.
Both sides played out a 2-2 draw during regulation time and the game went straight into penalties.
Missing out on the chance to have a cup run is a blow, but the Toffees also suffered another potential blow during the game as Lucas Digne picked up a knock.
The Frenchman was withdrawn with 10 minutes left on the clock for Michael Keane, and according to The Athletic journalist Patrick Boyland, the left-back sustained an ankle injury.
He posted on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night: “Apparently TV commentators saying ankle injury for Digne.”
Huge blow?
Everton would be disappointed to have missed a great chance to advance, and their lack of quality squad depth was evident on the night.
Digne has played in all of their five Premier League games of the season so far, and while it is still unclear whether he is out of weekend’s clash with Norwich City or for longer, the Toffees would be sweating over his fitness and hoping for good news.
The versatile Ben Godfrey finished the game at left-back and would be available to continue in the position if the first-choice is unable to play.
The Englishman is an excellent defender, but he cannot provide the same attacking services and deliver the quality crosses Digne brings to the table.
Scans will decide if it is a serious injury or not, and that should be known in the coming days.
Everton will hope their left-back can return to action as soon as possible, and arms are crossed for now.
