Goodison View: Rafa Benitez has perfect plan to secure January move for Alessio Romagnoli
Everton were exposed at the back on Saturday against Aston Villa, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat to record their first loss of the season.
Rafa Benitez was not able to call on some of his key players, but there is no denying that he needs to improve his defence, and the Spaniard appears to be making moves ahead of the January transfer window.
According to CMW, the Toffees are interested in bringing AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli, 26, to Goodison Park in the winter, with their boss particularly interested in a deal.
They are planning to table an offer in the coming months, and CMW claim that should help them beat Juventus and Inter Milan to his signature, with the Serie A duo keen to wait until summer when he is a free agent.
The Italian is not a new name to Everton scouts having been linked in March [il Milanista], and while it was Carlo Ancelotti that was tracking him at the time ahead of the summer, Benitez seems to have been impressed by him.
Yerry Mina and Michael Keane have been the preferred centre-back pairing this term, but Romagnoli is an upgrade on the duo.
He is also capable of playing at left-back, and that is versatility that would come in handy if Benitez needs cover for Lucas Digne or wants to play a back three.
With over 250 appearances to his name, the defender has more than enough experience, and the Blues need to be having someone like that marshalling their defence if they are serious about challenging for Europe.
