Patrick Boyland waxes lyrical of ‘Excellent’ Jack Barrett
Everton goalkeeper Jack Barrett was one of the few standout performers in the under-21s’ 2-0 defeat against Carlisle United on Wednesday, according to Patrick Boyland.
The Athletic journalist was impressed by the saves he made throughout the game, but was helpless at keeping Brad Young out, who scored a brace for the hosts.
Midfielder Lewis Warrington also put in a good effort off the bench, and was Boyland’s pick of the Everton players.
Via his personal Twitter account, he wrote, “Everton U21s lost 2-0 at Carlisle tonight in the Papa John’s Trophy. Midfielder Lewis Warrington pick of the bunch after coming on at HT + some excellent saves from goalkeeper Jack Barrett.”
Bright future
The 19-year-old pulled off a number of decent saves throughout the game and looked in good shape.
In a few years, he could be ready for first-team football and could even be the number two to Jordan Pickford.
Clubs tend to go for senior players to be the backups, but if there’s a promising talent in reserve, then they can make an exception.

In May this year, he penned an extension at the club and performances like these have merited the club’s trust in him.
He’s known to model his game around Pickford and also Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson [Love Everton] – which is quite the bar one would want their youngsters to set.
Hopefully, he one day becomes as good as either of them as there’s certainly a lot of potential in him and with the right application and hard work he can reach the pinnacle of the game.
