Chris Sutton bewildered by Tom Davies in Everton-Manchester United 1-1 draw

Chris Sutton was left bewildered by Tom Davies and an Everton fan after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The Blues went behind to the Red Devils at Old Trafford as Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half, only for Andros Townsend to equalise in the second half.

However, they could stolen all three points at the death had Davies elected to shoot rather than pass to an offside Yerry Mina when the goal was at the midfielder’s mercy.

“It was odd that he didn’t take responsibility himself,” Sutton said on BBC 606 [02/10/21], as relayed on their Twitter account.

Sutton was also baffled by an call from an Everton supporter.

“It infuriates me because I hate Benitez and I was hoping we’d be bottom of the league by Christmas and he’d get fired,” the Blues fan said.

“Just say that again,” Sutton remarked, audibly shocked by the admission made after a result that took Everton into the top-four.

Searching for confidence

Taking the Davies point to begin with, it really looked like a player suffering from a chronic lack of confidence.

One might suggest it showed unselfishness, or a creative eye, but it should have been obvious that there was a great danger of Mina being offside, and with such a great opportunity himself, Davies should have taken a shot on goal.

But it probably sums up how the 23-year-old is feeling at this present time; he is yet to start a league game under Rafa Benitez with Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure firmly established as the Spaniard’s first-choice midfield pairing.

Touching on the Everton fan’s point, meanwhile, it’s a pretty shocking statement on its own, but it sums up the feeling around Benitez a mere few months ago.

Despite extreme reservations by many, Benitez is slowly winning them around.
