Keith Hackett: Official set for PGMOL dressing-down after Everton v Manchester United incident

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton.

Keith Hackett was critical of the assistant referee for attempting to justify a decision in the second half of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Everton.

Anthony Martial opened the scoring at Old Trafford before Andros Townsend equalised in the second half.

However, Everton thought they had won the game in the final few minutes after Tom Davies squared the ball to Yerry Mina for a simple tap-in.

There were questions over whether Mina was offside, but the assistant appeared to wave Manchester United protests away and signalled as to why a goal would be allowed.

However, after the Colombian was found to be beyond the ball and last defender, Hackett has warned the official to be more careful.

“All communication from the assistant referee is ideally with the flag and not to be the referee because it can complicate the situation,” Hackett told Goodison News.

“I think this was him trying to justify a decision but stay out of it, because it will be checked, as it was.

“These are the things that happen that as the boss of the PGMOL you discuss with the individual to ensure that there is no repeat, and then you actually just mention this when you have all the assistant referees together.

“Just take care in your non-evasive hand signals because he was trying to justify it and got it wrong.”

In other Everton news, this Blues star has branded a talkSPORT pundit ‘Mr Clickbait’ after sharing his verdict on Mohamed Salah.
