Everton Fan Mailbag: When will the Toffees win the league?

Every week we’ll be asking Everton fans on our Twitter account for questions that will be answered by Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham. You can join in by following the Goodison News Twitter account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.

Everton have had a fantastic start to the season, and as we head into the rest of October’s matches, they are well in the race for the top four.

Rafael Benitez is managing to get as much as he can out of his current squad and is really pushing them on.

However, after years and years of unwise investment, FFP appears to be biting and forcing the Toffees to be more frugal, which in the long run could dent any European ambitions or other ambitions.

With that in mind, we asked for your burning questions about all things Everton-related for Goodison News correspondent Jack Cunningham to answer, and one Toffees fan wanted to know when the club could win the Premier League.

Now, this is not a question that I was expecting to answer any time soon!

The Toffees have never won the Premier League and have only ever finished in the top four once [transfermarkt].

They are backed by a very wealthy owner who has invested a lot of money into the club, but they haven’t quite got the reward that outlay should have returned.

This suggests that the Toffees are quite far away from winning the Premier League, and you could argue there are simply too many wealthy clubs to compete with.

The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea are backed by owners who want to win and will do anything they can to do that.

Then you have Liverpool and Manchester United, who will always be up there.

Then you even have Newcastle United, who are now the richest club in the world and have ambitions of winning the Premier League within five to ten years [Sky Sports].

The truth is that the Toffees might struggle to consistently play in Europe, never mind win the league.

I honestly couldn’t even predict when they could win the league because there are too many clubs with more resources than the Toffees.

However, that doesn’t mean that the club will never win anything, and in Benitez, they have a manager with a ridiculous trophy record.

So an FA Cup or Carabao Cup shouldn’t be ruled out, but the Premier League looks pretty much impossible.
