Kieran Maguire discusses Everton and their use of a risk management officer

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire reports that Everton having a risk and governance officer is unique in professional football.

Speaking on the latest edition of The Price of Football podcast, Maguire went into great detail discussing this role and what they do for the Toffees.

It seems as if Paul McNicholas comes from a legal background and helps the club stay within FFP boundaries, which is very important for all football clubs.

Everton

Maguire said: “It’s the first time I’ve seen a risk or governance director.

“Clearly, with issues such as Financial Fair Play, with issues such as with regards to the behaviour of employees, then I think it’s useful to have somebody that’s perhaps from a legal background when decisions are being made.”

Important role.

Given that the Toffees under Farhad Moshiri have spent a lot of money for not that much return, we would argue that it is sensible to have someone in place who can manage the finances.

Remember, the Toffees couldn’t spend much in the summer because of Financial Fair Play after years and years of pretty unwise spending.

Now that the Toffees have someone in place to manage all that, we believe that their finances should start to recover in time.

Everton

Given the way the club have spent money, we would argue that if any club needed someone to manage the spending and assess risks, then it was probably Everton.

However, they are setting a precedent for other Premier League clubs to follow, and this could be something that we start to see across the league.

This is an interesting edition of The Price of Football podcast, and there are lots of points on Everton that Toffees fans might want to hear.
