Sky Sports journalist blasts Everton over Dominic Calvert-Lewin injury update

Sky Sports journalist Ben Grounds has blasted Everton for their treatment of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

On Wednesday, the Blues confirmed in a statement that Calvert-Lewin, 24, has “suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a quadriceps injury and will remain out for a number of weeks”.

Grounds suggests that DCL’s injury issues are down to the England striker being over-worked due to a lack of cover in his position at Goodison Park.

“Little sympathy for the club over Calvert-Lewin, who has every right to feel he’s not been looked after,” Grounds wrote via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday.

“Everton played him through the pain of a previous injury.

“An inevitable consequence based on the legacy of past failures which left the club unable to buy adequate cover.”

Really?

Can Everton be blamed for this or is it just bad luck?

There’s nothing there to confirm or even suggest that Calvert-Lewin’s injury issues are down to the fact he’s been played through the pain of a previous injury or that he’s been over-worked.

Grounds has a right to his opinion, but we’re just not buying the most part of it.

We do, however, agree that the Blues haven’t had a suitable back-up option for Calvert-Lewin and Salomon Rondon’s performance in the defeat to West Ham on Sunday showcases that.

Rondon was woeful in that defeat.

He was never really that good at West Brom, he played well in spells for Rafa Benitez at Newcastle and he’s also had a spell in China.

Is that really the kind of player we should be signing?

Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have been superb additions. While some fans had doubts, those doubts weren’t as big as the ones surrounding Rondon.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to put up with the Venezuela international even more now with DCL out for longer.
