Brighton and Norwich made summer enquiries to sign Holgate

Brighton and Norwich were reportedly keen on signing Everton defender Mason Holgate in the summer.

According to The Liverpool Echo, the Premier League duo made tentative enquiries into the availability of the 25-year-old.

However, Holgate’s preference was to stay put at Goodison Park and fight for his place in the first team.

Should be sold

Despite Everton’s major injury crisis, Holgate is still struggling to get a game under Rafa Benitez.

Even under his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti, game time was hard to come by, so it is not just the case of one manager not rating him.

The time has arrived for the Toffees and Holgate to part ways as it’s clear that he’s unlikely to break into the first team any time soon.

He’s 25 and capable of playing in a number of positions – two important factors that will add to his value should Everton start offering him to other clubs.

The player still has four more years left on his current deal at the club so the option of him running down his contract and leaving on a free is non-existent.

Given Everton’s cash crunch, it’s imperative that they cash in on fringe players like Holgate.

Despite being labelled as “excellent” by Liverpool Echo’s Sam Carroll on Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue: The Everton FC Podcast last December, his performances have been everything but and Marcel Brands must look to offload him as soon as possible.
