Everton-backed five subs rule likely to become permanent

The rule allowing teams to make up to five substitutes, which is backed by Everton, is set to become permanent, according to The Times.

Domestic leagues still would have the liberty to decide whether they want three or five subs to be in place, but International FA Board (Ifab) announced on Wednesday, a proposal to make these changes permanent.

For the Premier League to make this rule permanent, 14 of the 20 clubs will have to back it, while at the most recent meeting last December only 10 were in favour.

Everton

Everton were one of them, per The Daily Mail, as the vote was split by half with most of the top 10 sides voting in favour.

Good change?

With Ifab now coming up with these proposals, it won’t be long before the Premier League puts it to a vote again.

Everton, in December, voted when they had a stronger and deeper squad, and we’re not sure that is the case now.

Whether or not they will still vote in favour of it, is anyone’s guess and it will depend on how much money they’re willing to spend in the near future.

Rafa Benitez walked through the door and barely got any money to strengthen his squad in the summer.

Currently, Everton struggle to have three game changers on the bench during matchdays and a lot of that is down to the injuries in the squad.

It will be interesting to see what the Spaniard’s take is on this rule change and whether he would be in favour of it being made permanent in the Premier League.
