Goodison Tactics: This is how Everton can hurt Wolves

On Monday, Everton face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, looking to bounce back from their dreadful defeat last weekend to Watford.

The Toffees have lost two games in a row, and a trip away from Goodison Park might be exactly what they need to try and get back to winning ways.

Their opponents are on a nice little run themselves and are unbeaten in their last four league games.

However, WhoScored claims that Wolves’ biggest weaknesses are avoiding individual errors and stopping long shots.

So we are going to take a look at two goals that Wolves have conceded this season, which show both problems and then try and work out how Rafael Benitez can exploit them.

The first goal is Newcastle United’s from Wolves’ 2-1 win in early October.

This was an awful goal from Wolves’ point of view, really and was a combination of individual errors and conceding from a long shot.

First of all, Sa shouldn’t stay down and try to get the game stopped, then Ruben Neves sells his teammate short.

Hendrick is then allowed too much time on the ball, and in Sa’s desperation to get back, he misses the ball entirely, and it flies in off the post.

Now, there is no way that the Toffees can force individual errors, but it is clear that the Old Gold like to play out from the back, and if the Toffees can pounce on that, they should be on course to cause some problems.

The next goal we will look at was scored by Aston Villa and involved more individual errors.

So, again, you would have to say that this goal was avoidable from Wolves’ point of view, and it all starts from losing the ball high up the field.

Now, the Toffees won’t have Abdoulaye Doucoure to try and force these mistakes, but if Benitez employs a high press, you would expect Everton to get plenty of joy.

Also, if the likes of Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray can have some strikes on goal from range, then that should also cause the Old Gold some problems.

In other Everton news, a report has revealed what position Benitez desperately wanted to improve last summer.
