Kevin Campbell reacts to Ben Godrey error in Everton loss v Wolves
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has tried to defend Ben Godfrey after the Everton defender’s pass gifted Wolves a goal in their 2-1 loss at Molineux on Monday night.
As shown on Sky Sports, Wolves went 2-0 ahead through Raul Jimenez when Godfrey, 23, played a Kevin De Bruyne-esque pass through his own defence into the Mexico forward.
Rafa Benitez started Godfrey at left-back against Wolves and the ex-Norwich centre-back clearly looked out of his comfort zone in that area of the pitch.
Campbell doesn’t condone Godfrey’s error but suggests that it’s telling that the two-time England international felt he had to play the ball into that area.
Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said: “No, you can’t [legistrate for errors like that] but you can look at the fact that Godfrey thought he had to pass it back there as opposed to playing it to a centre-back who can clear their lines.

“The bottom line is this – there’s a hangover from the Watford game. That’s what it is.
“It’s a bit of a hangover and they couldn’t seem to get themselves going once Wolves were on the front foot and they could have really gone more than two goals down.
“In the second half, you saw them rally and get themselves back together. But in this league, it’s difficult to give a team a two-goal lead and come back.
“We’ve seen it happen but it is difficult. If you do that too many times, you’re not coming back.”
