Keith Hackett: VAR got it wrong with Everton penalty v Spurs
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...
Keith Hackett has insisted that VAR got it wrong to overturn the Everton penalty in the 0-0 draw against Spurs on Sunday.
The Toffees were handed a spot-kick after Richarlison was felled by Hugo Lloris, a decision that was eventually overturned.
Hackett believes it is irrelevant that Lloris touched the ball as he still took out the Brazilian in order to get there at Goodison Park.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Hackett said, “I think this, for me, was not a clear and obvious error.
“I was surprised Jon Moss and VAR came in. I thought Chris Kavanagh was in a good position, made what looked like a sound judgement.
“The argument that he got a touch on the ball is a misnomer because getting a touch on the ball and then taking the player out is for me a penalty kick.
“I think VAR got it wrong – Kavanagh is then under pressure as he is dealing with a senior referee in Moss, I think referees have got to get to the point.”
Wrong.
We still can’t believe this one was overturned.
How can an experienced referee such as Moss who is operating the VAR look at this and think that it is a clear and obvious error?
Kavanagh was in a brilliant position and pointed to the spot, and he technically was right given that Lloris smashed into Richarlison.
It makes zero sense and there is still far too much confusion regarding the technology and when it can be used within the game.
Every incident can’t be looked at, or the game will simply have no need for the officials in the near future.
Kavanagh would not have been ridiculed if his decision stuck, especially given the amount of contact there was and this is just another example of the consistency in the Premier League being thrown out of the window.
