Keith Hackett slams Chris Kavanagh after Everton draw v Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Keith Hackett has blasted referee Chris Kavanagh for his performance in the 0-0 draw between Everton and Tottenham at Goodison Park on Sunday.

VAR overturned a penalty kick that Kavanagh had awarded for a foul on Richarlison.

Later in the game, Mason Holgate was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Pierre-Emile Hjobjerg after a VAR review despite Kavanagh initially showing him a yellow.

While Holgate’s red card cannot really be disputed, the call to overturn the penalty decision has caused anger among the Goodison fanbase and ex-FIFA referee Hackett has turned on Kavanagh and called for him to hold himself accountable for his drab display.

Speaking to Goodison News, Hackett said: “I thought this was a really wishy-washy performance by the referee.

Kavanagh is an international referee but he just wasn’t sharp enough for me.

He needs to go back to the drawing board and review his performances because he is a referee that can make big decisions.

But, he was off the pace, I think he was lacking in concentration.

It was a really poor performance.”

Everton were left winless in five Premier League matches after the goalless draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

Next up for the Blues is a testing trip down the M62 to play Manchester City on November 21.
