Abdoulaye Doucoure nearing return to Everton light training

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure could be back in Premier League action sooner than expected as his swift recovery continues.

According to El Bobble, the Frenchman is closing on a return to light training following an acceleration in his fitness journey.

The reliable Everton insider – followed on Twitter by The Times journalist Paul Joyce – posted the update on their account late on Tuesday evening.

They said: “Abdoulaye Doucoure continues to make a quicker than expected recovery and is nearing a return to light training at Finch Farm.

“Whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin, unfortunately, remains unavailable for the foreseeable future.”

Can’t wait

Everton have massively struggled in the middle of the park without Doucoure, and the fans cannot wait to have him back in action.

The 28-year-old has missed the last three league games for the Toffees, and they have lost two of them, drawing the other one.

They have conceded seven goals in his absence, scoring thrice, and his influence at both ends of the pitch has been massively missed.

With two goals and four assists in eight league games to his name in 2021-22, Doucoure has been the perfect box-to-box midfielder for Everton.

While the trip to Manchester City is still two weeks away, seeing him return to action for that clash should not be completely ruled out given the pace with which his recovery is going.

He was initially tipped for a 10-week layoff and a potential surgery on the foot injury he picked up against the Hammers [El Bobble], but it appears he could be back sooner rather than later, and Rafa Benitez will be hoping that happens amid his side’s current woes.
