Everton make approach to sign Barcelona defender Arnau Comas

Everton have made an approach to sign Barcelona centre-back Arnau Comas, according to Cadena Ser journalist Santi Ovalle.

Comas, 21, has made just one senior appearance for the Spanish giants in the 2019/20 edition of the Copa del Rey.

The Spaniard was named in their squad for August’s 1-1 La Liga draw at Athletic Bilbao, though.

Spanish news outlet Que T’hi Jugues has now made the claim on their verified Twitter account that Everton want to sign Comas, with the message retweeted by the original source Ovalle on his personal Twitter account.

They wrote: “The future of Arnau Comas. He has received interest from Leicester and Everton. The footballer wants to exhaust his chances of succeeding at Barça, but the time has come to take a step forward It has a contract until 2022, extendable to two more optional seasons.”

Inexperienced

The mere mention of Barcelona is usually enough to get any fan out of their seat when transfer stories emerge.

However, the Barca are not the stat-studded side they once were, at least on the pitch anyway.

That’s not to say they are not still producing some of the top young talents in world football – Ansu Fati, Pedri and Gavi have all starred in La Liga and on the international scene for Spain recently.

It’s fair to say Comas, though, is not on their level, and he is actually older than all three.

He has been a regular for Barcelona B in the Segunda Division B this season and was named captain during the summer, but his top-flight experience is severely limited.

As such, it’s hard to make a fair judgement on his credentials to become a first-team player at Everton.

The Blues need reinforcements in central defence due to the poor form of Mason Holgate and Michael Keane, allied to the injury issues of Yerry Mina.

But they are surely likely to move for a more experienced option alongside Ben Godfrey.

Comas, though, could be identified as one for the future as Marcel Brands seeks to expand the club’s pool of talent at youth level.

In other Everton news, Rafa Benitez has ruled this Blues star out until mid-December through injury.
