Benitez will have ‘some funds’ to use in January as £35m Everton story rubbished by reliable journo
Rafa Benitez will have “some funds” to spend in the January transfer window despite major financial losses at Everton, according to Mirror journalist David Lynch.
Writing in the Sunday Mirror [print edition, November 21, page 69] Lynch rubbished a claim that the Blues need to raise £35million in order to make new signings in January.
He’s reported that while Everton have suffered big losses in recent years – including a record £139.9million loss in their last accounts – the financial picture at Goodison Park isn’t as gloomy as it would seem.

It doesn’t sound as though Benitez will have any kind of a war chest in January but James Rodriguez’s exit has helped things and Lynch adds “Everton fans have every reason to look forward with optimism”.
It’s not all doom and gloom
While things have not been going as smooth lately, Benitez has already shown that he can make good additions to his squad at Goodison Park without them costing the earth.
Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have so far done well and while there are plenty more gaps that need to be plugged in this squad, the option to sell of fringe players and underperformers could boost Benitez’s budget further.

However, a mid-season overhaul doesn’t sound like the best of ideas and holding funds back until the summer transfer window might be a better option.
Let’s face it, this season is already starting to feel like a write-off.
We probably won’t be in danger of suffering relegation and it’s unlikely that we’ll challenge for a top-seven finish.
West Ham, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Wolves have all shown they could finish above us this season and then you have the usual big-six that will be up there too in the top-half.
Lynch may be telling Evertonians to be excited about what unfolds this season under Rafa but we’re expecting a damp squib that consists of unpredictable results and a strong anti-Benitez feeling among the crowds.
In other Everton news, the Blues have made an approach to sign this Spanish captain from a La Liga giant.
