Thierry Small sends message to Tyler Onyango after his Everton debut
Tyler Onyango came off the bench to make his Everton debut during Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City, and the midfielder was glad.
The 18-year-old replaced Allan with just a few minutes left on the clock, and while there was barely any time left for him to impress, seeing him finally make his first-team bow was an incredible sight, and he took to his personal Instagram account to react afterwards.
Onyango’s former teammate Thierry Small was among those that reacted to the development in the comments section, with the young defender happy for his pal’s achievement. “Congrats,” he wrote.
The Everton midfielder said: “Disappointing result, however, delighted to have made my premier league debut.”
There have been several calls for Onyango to be involved in first-team action, especially with Abdoulaye Doucoure out injured, and Benitez handed him a chance at the Etihad Stadium.
With a lot of games to play heading into the festive season, the teenager will surely be getting more chances to impress, and he will be keen to prove himself alongside the big boys whenever opportunities come his way.
Small left Everton for Southampton in the summer amid uncertainty over his senior football chances, but he is yet to make his league debut for the Saints and could have been wishing that was him against Man City on Sunday.
Benitez has not hesitated to play some of the Toffees’ youngsters since he arrived in the summer to replace Carlo Ancelotti, and more of them are likely to get a look-in now with five first-team regulars out injured.
Everton could be forced to bring in additions in January, but with very little available for them to spend, they could resort to some of their Under-23s players for the rest of the season.
