Everton youngsters Ellis Simms and Jarrad Branthwaite may feature v Brentford

Everton youngsters Ellis Simms and Jarrad Branthwaite were withdrawn at half-time during the U-23s 2-1 win against Brighton at Goodison Park on Monday evening.

According to the Liverpool Echo, it was interesting timing, given the Brentford game over the weekend and dismal performances by a number of senior players against Manchester City the day before.

There’s no guarantee that they will be in the matchday squad, but Simms has been named on the bench on a few occasions and given Richarlison’s suspension and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury, he could be handed a role in the game.

Looking at the performance against City over the weekend, no Evertonian would be pleased with more than a couple of players.

It was a wretched display that fully merited an embarrassing scoreline. 3-0 actually flattered the Toffees.

However, on Monday, Goodison Park was treated to an exhilarating game that saw a number of the youngsters shine and stake a claim for the first team.

Marcel Brands along with Duncan Ferguson were in attendance and they clearly would have taken some notes to Rafa Benitez about the performances of Simms and Branthwaite.

It remains to be seen if the Spaniard is brave enough to integrate them into his first team.

Currently, he seems short on options and ideas and throwing the kitchen sink at the problems may prove to be the perfect solution for him.
