Kevin Campbell reacts to the injury news on Everton man Demarai Gray

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell believes that Demarai Gray’s injury update is “devastating” for Everton.

The former Toffees striker thinks that his old club desperately need their injured players back because the rest of the squad isn’t good enough to fill in.

Gray was withdrawn before the 20-minute mark against Manchester City on Sunday with what has been confirmed as an abductor injury that will keep him out for six weeks [El Bobble].

Campbell, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, revealed his thoughts on the injury.

He said: “It’s another devastating blow, but you can’t legislate for injuries.

“Injuries will happen, and he’s one of the most productive players for Everton Demarai Gray. He was looking pretty sharp on Sunday.

“So six weeks, there is a lot of games coming up in those six weeks.

“I believe Calvert-Lewin is close; Doucoure’s close; they need their full quota back because when you get beyond the first 11, 12, 13 players, the quality level tends to dip, and they need these boys back as quick as possible.”

Bad news for the Toffees.

Gray had been quiet in recent weeks after a stunning start to life in an Everton shirt.

However, he has still been a real livewire for most of the season, and the Toffees will undoubtedly miss him in the games that he won’t feature in.

It is just a shame that this injury has happened just before the festive period because the Toffees could really have done without him missing this part of the season.

Campbell mentioned Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure, and hopefully, they will be back soon.

However, it is just a shame for Gray, who had scored three goals and provided two assists this season.

Hopefully, he recovers quickly and returns to action before the full six weeks have passed.

Certainly, this would be nice to see, and it would also ease the pressure on Rafael Benitez’s already stretched squad.

Overall, though, we agree with Campbell’s assessment of this injury, and it could have a significant impact on the team.

In other Everton news, Michael Ball has had enough of Salomon Rondon.
