Rafael Benitez responds when asked about Everton fans booing after 1-0 defeat v Brentford

When asked about Everton fans booing at the end of the Brentford game, Rafael Benitez provided a cryptic response.

The Spaniard claimed that he could understand the fans’ frustrations because he and his team were also annoyed to have lost the match.

The Toffees fell behind to an Ivan Toney penalty and couldn’t score no matter what they did, and at the end of the match, the away section expressed their frustration towards the players and Benitez.

When asked about the fans in his post-match press conference [Liverpool Echo], the Spaniard said: “We can understand the frustration of the fans because, also, we are frustrated.

“You cannot complain about the effort of the players or the intensity they put in the game; they tried from the beginning until the end.

“We had lots of crosses, lots of shots, we couldn’t score, but you cannot complain about effort, and you can be disappointed, like everyone, because we don’t want to lose.”

Interesting response from the manager.

Benitez needs a win, and this game represented a good chance to seal one, but as soon as they conceded, it looked like an uphill battle.

There were a few decisions that went against them, and on another day, the Toffees would have had at least one penalty.

However, you can’t use that as an excuse because they had more than enough possession and created enough chances to at least take a point from the match.

But, they didn’t, and now they face Liverpool at Goodison Park before playing the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the coming games.

So, things could be about to get a whole lot worse for the Toffees before they get any better, which isn’t what Benitez or the club need.

Benitez believes that when Yerry Mina and Dominic Calvert-Lewin return, the Toffees will improve and push on up the table, but that isn’t guaranteed.
