Everton ‘torn’ over Gretar Steinsson future after Marcel Brands exit
Everton chiefs are pondering over the future of Everton head of recruitment Gretar Steinsson, according to The Athletic.
The former Bolton Wanderers right-back was brought to the club by Marcel Brands, who left his post as Everton director of football last week (5 December).
Writing for The Athletic, Patrick Boyland and Greg O’Keeffe claim the Icelandic man’s position is the source of great debate at Goodison Park.

They said: “Head of recruitment and long-time Brands ally Gretar Steinsson is one figure likely to come under the microscope. So far, he has remained in his post but there are conflicting feelings internally regarding his position.
“While some are preaching the need for stability after a high-profile departure, others see Steinsson as a high-profile remnant of Brands’ regime. They are torn between making a clean break and looking to instil some sort of stability during a period of turmoil.”

Another exit on the cards?
Given Brands’ influence at Everton, Rafa Benitez is surely keen to see one of his most influential allies join him out the exit door.
Clearly, the Spaniard wants to exert control over the club, particularly with transfer dealings, and Steinsson could meddle with his plans.
Benitez wants a clean break from the Dutchman and those associated with him, and Steinsson could be the next high-profile figure to fall on his sword.
In fairness to Steinsson and Brands, quite how much control they’ve been given is unclear, with reports that owner Farhad Moshiri has had a big hand in transfers with big prods by agents in the direction of their clients.
But, their record has certainly been patchy to say the least since they arrived at the club, so it’s hard to have too many issues with either of their exit,s if Steinsson does join Brands out of Goodison.
