Lee Johnson: Sunderland handling of Everton sensation Nathan Broadhead ‘Embarrassing’
Lee Johnson has admitted his embarrassment at Sunderland’s handling of on-loan Everton youngster Nathan Broadhead.
The former Bristol City man was speaking following the 23-year-old’s recent starring role in the 5-0 thrashing of Morecambe on Tuesday evening (7 December).
The Welsh youngster – who joined the Black Cats in a season-long loan deal in the summer – has been restricted to just ten appearances for the League One outfit so far this season, albeit caught the eye with a brace in that latest thumping victory.

Speaking after that result to the Sunderland Echo, Johnson was full of praise for the performances of his new recruit, revealing that it had been ‘embarrassing’ not having the forward in his side more regularly.
“We’re pleased that Everton have entrusted us with his development,” he said. “As I said before, it was embarrassing that he wasn’t in the starting XI, but he’s there now and he’s getting a good run.”

Bright future?
The Welsh youngster is currently enjoying his second loan stint away from the Merseysiders after previously spending the 2019/20 campaign with Burton Albion.
Under the guidance of former Bristol City boss Johnson at the Stadium of Light, Broadhead has had to bide his time for more regular involvement, although his latest haul offers an indication of the talent that he does clearly possess.
His tally now stands at five league goals for the season, although it remains to be seen if he can maintain that form for the promotion-chasing side.
Equally, at 23, he is no longer an up and coming prospect, with possible doubts over whether he will have a future at his parent club, even amid their recent troubles under new boss Rafa Benitez.
