Danny Murphy: Rafa Benitez doomed to fail at Everton

Everton manager Rafa Benitez is “doomed” to fail at Goodison Park, according to BBC pundit Danny Murphy.

The Spaniard is under huge pressure from supporters, the majority of whom have called for him to be sacked in recent weeks.

The Toffees have picked up just five points from their last 10 matches and fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday (12 December).

Speaking on TalkSport today (13 December), Murphy suggested that Benitez has reached the point of no return at Goodison Park.

“I think it’s doomed, that situation,” he said. “He doesn’t have the squad to pull it around. He can’t take Everton to a level he needs to for the Evertonians to be happy with that squad.

“When he first went in there, I thought from a footballing perspective, his history, what he’s done before, it looked like a decent appointment.

“I’d forgotten the Liverpool connection, the things he said about Everton. It was always destined to end in turmoil.

“I listened to the Evertonians last week. There’s no way he’s pulling that back around. It’s just a disaster waiting to happen.”

Losing battle

There were eyebrows raised when Benitez was appointed by Everton in the summer given his history with city rivals Liverpool.

He was always going to be fighting a losing battle with supporters, even when the season started in encouraging style with four wins from the opening six games.

Now results have taken a severe downturn, patience has worn thin very quickly and no one is cutting him any slack.

Of course there have been injury issues and as Murphy suggests, the squad is not the best in the world, but Everton should definitely be higher than where they currently find themselves in 14th.

Bizarrely, it seems as if Benitez still has the backing of Farhad Moshiri but you wonder how long that will last if results continue to suffer.

In other Everton news, the Toffees should reignite their interest in one player who is reportedly free to leave his club in January.
