Richard Keys: Everton would be better off with Duncan Ferguson upfront than Rondon

Everton lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, with goals from Conor Gallagher and James Tomkins making the difference as the visitors suffered defeat.

Rafa Benitez attempted to switch things up when play resumed having been a goal down, with Salomon Rondon and Anthony Gordon coming off for Richarlison and Fabian Delph, respectively, but Richard Keys was not happy with the decision to throw in the Venezuelan striker, taking to his personal Twitter account to react.

The 32-year-old finally opened his account for the Toffees on his 11th Premier League appearance for them, but it was not enough to change his side’s fortunes in their dismal defeat to the Eagles.

The beIN SPORT presenter said: “Everton would be better off putting big Dunc on than Rondon.”

Wrong?

Rondon handed Benitez’s side a lifeline just some minutes after coming on, and Keys would have felt slightly embarrassed by his post.

The former Newcastle United and West Brom hitman did not hit the ground running after arriving at Goodison Park as a free agent in the summer, but that was largely due to his lack of pre-season training.

Rondon impressed while at West Brom and Newcastle, and Benitez knew he would be getting a quality target man in him after deciding to reunite with him for the second time.

The Everton striker proved exactly what he is capable of bringing to the table with his involvement in the build-up to his goal, and he will be hoping that can fire him on going forward.

The South American is probably not going to be able to replicate the performances of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a Toffees shirt, but he has what it takes to score goals for this club, and he could end up being a bargain addition to their attack despite his initial struggles.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting January loan-to-buy bid for centre-mid hailed by Jack Grealish last month.
