Davy Klaassen: Ajax training is ‘higher level’ than Everton

Former Everton player Davy Klaassen has hit out at the standard of training sessions on Merseyside.

The Dutchman moved to Goodison Park for £23.6million from Ajax in June 2017, but made just seven Premier League appearances before departing for Werder Bremen the following year.

He then returned to Ajax in October 2020 and has played 20 times in all competitions this season, scoring four goals.

Speaking to Ajax Life, Klaassen compared his time with the Dutch outfit to life at Everton.

“Ajax will always be special to me and I wanted to play at a higher level,” he said. “The Eredivisie may not be, but the training sessions at Ajax are of a higher level than at Everton or Werder Bremen.”

Flop

It is pretty ironic that Klaassen is condemning Everton when his time on Merseyside was nothing short of woeful.

There was plenty of excitement upon his arrival at the club after he had played a key part in getting Ajax to the Europa League final the season before.

However, right from the start the midfielder looked off the pace and sloppy in possession.

He ended up making only 16 appearances in all competitions and did not start a Premier League match after September.

Meanwhile, his only goal contribution was an assist in a Europa League qualifying tie against Slovakian side Ruzomberok.

Ronald Koeman’s departure in October did not help matters and then David Unsworth and Sam Allardyce clearly weren’t fans of Klaassen for the rest of the campaign.

Considering that the 28-year-old is now working under the highly-rated Erik ten Hag, perhaps it is no surprise he thinks Ajax’s training sessions are better.

In other Everton news, a January loan move could be on the cards for one Toffees youngster.
