We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has backed an Everton move for Brentford captain Pontus Jansson in the imminent future.

The former Toffees talisman exclusively speaking Goodison News admitted that once Rafa Benitez sorts out the defence, the rest will fall into place with too many errors taking place.

The Guardian has reported that Everton could make a move in January with the Swedish international out of contract in the upcoming summer.

“Pontus Jansson, I think he’s proving himself,” he told Goodison News. “The proving ground is can he play at the top level? Yes, he can.

“We saw him play at the top level this season and he hasn’t looked out of his depth, he’s looked pretty well. He’s looked strong.

“He’s one of them players who is determined and has got a bit about him, so why not? I think Everton getting that defence right is key.

“Once they get that defence right, the rest will take care of itself.”

Nothing to lose?

Looking at our defence from the 1-1 draw against Chelsea, it would certainly be an area to strengthen, regardless of how well they played.

Jarrad Branthwaite caught the eye scoring the equaliser, but there are doubts regarding his ability to perform every week at the highest level.

Yerry Mina is consistently linked with a move away from Goodison Park, and that happening could free up cash to bring in someone like Jansson.

We have been missing players who will put it all on the line for the blue shirt for quite some time now, and Jansson could fill that void perfectly.
