Tony Cottee baffled by Rafael Benitez's appointment by Everton

Tony Cottee believes Everton should never have appointed Rafael Benitez as their manager.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror [19 December], the former Sky Sports pundit slammed the Spaniard and those who decided to make him Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, including Farhad Moshiri.

Cottee would also like to see Duncan Ferguson take over from Benitez, and he believes that Eddie Howe would have taken the job in the summer because he was an Everton fan growing up.

He said: “I’m not a fan of Rafa, and I thought it was such a crazy, high-risk appointment.

“It didn’t make sense to me.

“To appoint a former Liverpool manager at Everton was a recipe for disaster.

“I think it will end in tears for Rafa.

“Eddie was a big fan of Everton when growing up, and he was certainly available.

“Big Dunc was already at the club, and he deserves a chance.”

Cottee is not a fan of Rafa.

Well, you can’t say that Cottee is sitting on the fence when it comes to Rafa.

He clearly thinks that the Spaniard shouldn’t have got the job and that he won’t last very long at all.

Of course, in the last three games, the Toffees have picked up four points from games against Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Now, the defeat against Palace was awful, and the draw against Chelsea was lucky, but given the injuries, that draw against the Blues could turn into a valuable point.

Now, Rafa was always going to be a risky appointment, but when everyone was fit, the Toffees played very well and actually started the season in great form.

So, it is hard to judge Benitez at the moment; he barely has any of his most important players available.

So, while we understand Cottee’s point, we still feel as if Benitez can be successful with the Toffees.

In other Everton news, Chelsea have identified one Toffees ace in January with Everton set to make a new signing.
