Everton make approach to sign Nottingham Forest sensation Brennan Johnson

Everton have made an approach to sign Nottingham Forest sensation Brennan Johnson in the upcoming January window.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who report that the Toffees will need to pay up to £20million for the Welsh international.

It is suggested that competition is high for Johnson, though, with Newcastle and Spurs just two of the other clubs wanting to seal a deal.

Johnson has started all but one game in the Championship for Forest this season, but it is hard to judge if he can make that step up to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old has managed to score five goals and add the same number of assists in those 23 appearances and is certainly catching the eye.

For £20million, though, you want someone who can make an instant impact in your starting XI – something that appears unlikely at this very stage.

One step too far?

Farhad Moshiri is said to be ready to back Benitez next month, but this may be one bridge too far for the owner.

Financial Fair Play rules are tight as they are, so adding another £20million on top of what looks like being spent already appears unlikely.

Dynamo Kyiv defender Vitaliy Mykolenko is said to be costing that price, and it may take another £10million to bring Nathan Patterson to Merseyside from Rangers [Daily Mail].

Johnson is no doubt a special talent who is destined for the top though, and it looks as though Benitez has seen that while no doubt watching closely.

The 20-year-old was described as “unbelievable” during the tenure of Sabri Lamouchi at the City Ground in a glowing reference.

It appears that this is out of the Toffees reach, but if Moshiri was to throw cash at the deal to get it done, no one could question how committed he was to the club – this is one to watch.
